This is an experiment with composition using bold typography and kanji characters. The characters roughly translate "to strike back". This experiment is preparation for an upcoming T-shirt project.
Like all great journeys, this project began with painting a monkey on a wall. Back in January, one of my good friends Mike invited me to sit in on his shooting of a music video for the Virginia band Devolver. There happened to be some house paint lying around and Mike asked me if I wanted to paint something on the wall. Never having done so, I literally jumped at the chance. The band was super into the imagery and thought it matched their over-all aesthetic and theme, so I suggested that I do some work for them.
I started sketching out different versions of what I'd painted and came out with something I was super happy with. So, I started playing with some type and eventually ended up with a quasi Gorillaz/ Anime package, which looked pretty rad, but didn't really mesh well with the band's aesthetic too well. So, I set that aside and kept on cooking.
Eventually one morning I was dicking around in Illustrator and came up with this skull mark that threw me in the direction I was looking for. I'd been researching some old Gothic typefaces from classic 80's horror novels and this gave me the perfect excuse to use one. Keeping in mind the band's theme of "devolve" and leaning on different cave-mane-esque imagery I cooked up shirt's, stickers, and a cover idea that conforms and complements each individual element.
Not to mention this band kicks a good amount of ass and you should definitely give them a listen.
